Our Spirit is fed by the Word of God; therefore, during your fast, you will want to devote time to reading the Bible, spending time with the Lord, and listening to His voice—our Spirits become stronger.
“And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:3-4) Our Soul is the part of us that will constantly whine and cry against a fast. We will experience hunger pangs, food craving, and withdrawals from chemical additives that may be in our diet. Your soul will tell you that it is fine to cheat on the Daniel Fast—no one is looking! But to lead a Spirit-filled, Spirit-led life, we must put the soul in its place. The soul harbors the lusts of the flesh.
Our Body will also rebel. If you do not get your daily allotment of caffeine, you may experience a headache. Your body will make you uncomfortable for 3-4 days. After the fourth day, you will find that you fell better than you thought possible. You may find that your body rebels when you try to reintroduce those foods that are unhealthy for you.
Paul speaks to the subject of Personal Discipline. “But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (I Corinthians 9:27) The Daniel Fast and Your Health
It is a well-known and documented fact that if one does something repeatedly for three weeks—good or bad—it becomes a habit. A powerful side benefit of the Daniel Fast is the improvement in health that most people experience.
One of the great things about the Daniel Fast is that you are not limited to any specific amount of food, but rather to the kinds of food permitted. The Daniel Fast is limited to vegetables, fruits, nuts and water. The Daniel Fast is a plant-based eating plan with the only beverage being water. God designed this miraculous machine that we call our body. He understands how it operates at its best and He gave us a plan for its upkeep. As Christians, we often take the liberty to eat things that adversely affect our health.
When our body, which God designed and created, is fed the good quality foods He created especially for it, we see an improvement in our health. The high fiber in the fruit, vegetables, and whole grains cleanses the body and improves digestion. It is not uncommon for cholesterol levels to drop, for blood sugar levels to balance, for weight to be lost, and for a general feeling of well-being to be experienced.
You will find some who say the Daniel Fast is a 10-day or 21-day fast, but as a sixteen year-old captive who had been selected for royal service by his captor, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Bible says that Daniel and his friends, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah ate a diet of vegetables and water for a minimum of three years. Will you commit to forty days? Anytime you make a significant change in your diet or exercise, consult your health professional. Also, if you have special health needs consider adjusting the eating plan to meet those requirements while maintaining the other restrictions for the fast.
